Boogie

Music games are enormously popular and Boogie is an attempt to capitalise on that popularity by combining both music and dancing. Well, we say dancing but it’s a pretty loose interpretation of the word.

Dancing in Boogie involves waving the Wii Remote in the air, you can waggle it in any direction to score points until you fill up the ‘boogie meter’, once that’s done you can push a button and follow the on-screen directions for a bonus.

Trouble is it doesn’t feel anything like dancing, all you’re doing is waving the Wii remote in the air until something happens on the screen, while the character moves on his own. There’s a beat you’re supposed to move to, but that doesn’t always match up with the song that’s playing.

The karaoke section isn’t much better. It’s a lot like SingStar where you sing along to blobs moving across the screen while lyrics are shown underneath. But like many singing games it doesn’t care if you hum or use lyrics. Worse is the fact that you can’t use a second microphone for a  duet or two player battle. It’s also odd that at no point do you get to both sing and dance at the same time, you can only do one or the other.

There is some promise here, the option to mix together a dance with songs and different camera angles is clever and easy enough for kids to use, and the game is really bright and colourful with some great songs included. The trouble is the basic singing and dancing just isn’t fun.

Verdict: 50%

It could be enjoyable for young children but the rest of us will soon get bored of the simplistic gameplay. There are better options available if you like this kind of thing.
