Call of Duty 3

One of the earliest FPS games to be released on the Wii, Call of Duty 3 suffers very poorly in comparison to Metroid Prime 3, which has a fantastically well-realised control system. Unfortunately Call of Duty 3 just feels like a standard console FPS shoe-horned onto the Wii.

A bog standard WW2 shooter, Call of Duty 3 sees you trudging around war-torn Europe shooting everyone’s favourite villain, the Nazis. The use of the Wii’s motion control should make this a fun and immersive experience, but it just ends up frustrating.

Aiming is done by pointing and moving the Wii remote control, while you move your character with the nunchuk analogue stick. It should work fine, but the controls have had no fine tuning so it’s nearly uncontrollable.

The controller dead zone (the area where you can move the aiming reticule without moving the view) is so tiny that even a slight movement of the Wii remote shifts the view, making it hard to focus on an item and fight at close range.

This is also irritating when trying to throw grenades, as you need to stretch to press the d-pad, often resulting in a crazy shifting of your viewpoint. It makes combat fiddly and incredibly unsatisfying.

This is actually a real shame because CoD 3 has everything we’ve come to expect of the series. An interesting, intense and fast-paced story and well designed maps make for an exciting WW2 adventure, but because you spend the whole time battling with the controls it’s hard to take any notice.

Good story and nice level design, but it’s all spoilt by the terrible controls which make it very difficult to get any fun out of this game.
