Medal of Honor Heroes 2

When the Wii was first announced there was a great deal of speculation as to what it would do for first-person shooters. Would the games become more involving, more intense, now that you had more tangible controls? Ubisoft’s Red Steel and EA’s Medal of Honor: Vanguard soon answered that, by proving that the Wii wasn’t ideally suited to the FPS genre.

Heroes 2 is the follow up to the very poorly received Vanguard, but at least it gets off to a good start by improving the controls. Rather than lumbering the player with lots of silly gestures to pull of basic moves, Heroes 2 uses the analogue stick for movement and the Wii remote for aiming and other commands.

But while the controls are a massive improvement, little has changed elsewhere. Like so many other Wii games, Heroes 2 suffers from poor visuals that are barely up to the standard of the last generation of console. Worse than that is the utterly pedestrian level maps and gameplay. It’s the same old Medal of Honor, but much shorter and uglier.

There is some variation on offer in the form of the Arcade mode though. This is an on-rails shooter that takes you through the single-player campaign again, except you only control the aiming. It’s a fun and unique option, despite the occasional difficulty spikes.

Multiplayer is present and thankfully you don’t have to remember any friend codes, but its biggest problem is the complete lack of other players. The game servers are so quiet it’s unlikely you’ll ever get to play in the maximum 32 player servers.

About as generic as WW2 games get. It’s one of the better examples of an FPS available on the Wii, but it doesn’t really offer anything new apart from the Arcade mode.
