Presents Table Tennis
Despite the control scheme being perfect for sports games there are surprisingly few good sports titles on the Wii. Aside from Wii Sports and a couple of EA titles there aren’t many that worth playing, but one of the best comes from a surprising source: Rockstar, maker of the Grand Theft Auto series.
Table Tennis doesn’t have oodles of content and loads of mini games like the GTA series, but it does have a very solid core game. It uses the controls to great effect to simulate real table tennis, making for some exciting matches.
You can choose from three different control methods, the default standard controls have you handling the bat only while the computer moves your player into position, the second option allows complete control over movement using the nunchuk and the third uses the analogue stick to handle hitting the ball.
It’s the first method that makes the most sense, and the most fun. The computer does a fine job of moving you about the table and adding the extra control in just makes things confusing, plus it loses that pick-up and play factor which makes the game so easy for newcomers.
The one thing missing from Table Tennis is an online mode. You can play with another person but there’s no option to hop online and challenge strangers. It’s not a huge problem though, and games like these are generally more enjoyable when played with someone standing next to you.
Verdict: 85%
One of the best sports games on the Wii, Table Tennis is fun, fast and easy to learn and makes great use if the Wii motion controls.
