Rygar: The Battle of Argus

Yet again we are faced with another game that is nothing more than a rehash of a last-gen console title. Avid PS2 gamers may well recognise this game from when it first came out in 2003. Don’t let the new name fool you, it’s identical to this now six year old game.

Rygar is your bog standard hack ‘n’ slash fantasy nonsense. Big muscle-man Rygar stomps around rending his enemies into tiny pieces and collecting coloured orbs that are floating about the place.

Rygar’s problem – amongst many – is that while it may have looked good in 2003, it’s now the kind of thing you’ll have seen before in Devil May Cry, God of War and a thousand other games. And in that time technology and gameplay has moved on a fair bit.

It is no longer acceptable to have a fixed camera angle, nor are the PS2 level visuals in any way comparable to current games, even on the Wii. There’s not a single smidgen of originality on show, instead you’re treated to a by-the-numbers fantasy action game that manages to be less impressive than the original God of War or Devil May Cry.

Verdict: 25%

Dull fantasy action that wasn’t much good when it first came out six years ago. This incredibly lazy port doesn’t deserve your cash.
