The Conduit

When the Wii was announced the first thing many gamers thought was how perfect the controls would be for a first person shooter. Unfortunately there have been very few examples of this, aside from the excellent Metroid Prime.

Conduit was hyped up in the months leading to its releases with promises of outstanding, game-changing FPS controls and the best visuals ever seen on the Wii. And in some way it doesn’t disappoint.

The controls really are good. Precise and smooth, they do indeed work brilliantly well and really show what the Wii can do, even if there are a few too many functions mapped to the buttons. It’s definitely worthy of the hype.

The visuals are less impressive. It’s a Wii game so we don’t expect something cutting edge, but while it’s technically solid the game is let down by a boring and generic art style.

This unimaginative art style is also reflected in the gameplay, which is where Conduit really stumbles. It’s one of the most generic FPS games we’ve seen in quite some time. The levels are boring and uninspired, the guns mostly dull, and standard alien enemies just stumble toward you in a straight line.

There are some half-hearted attempts at puzzles and pointless collectibles, but these fail to add much-needed depth. The multiplayer is slightly better, even if it doesn’t have anything that’s out of the ordinary the match-making works well and it proves to be enjoyable.

Completely generic and uninspired, the game lacks imagination and excitement. The best thing about it is the excellent controls which really do feel like something new.
