Hulk smash! Based on the recent blockbusting comic book movie starring Edward Norton, The Incredible Hulk game has you playing the green giant’s angry cousin in a rampage around New York.

Set loose in the Big Apple you are free to roam around the city doing whatever you feel like, which in Hulk’s case usually means bashing something to pieces with his bare fists. The great thing about the Incredible Hulk is that you can leap and climb up all the buildings in sight, with no real barriers in your way to prevent you moving about the city.

Another nice touch is that almost anything can either be destroyed, or picked up and used to smash the scenery. Lamp posts make perfect bats for walloping cars and sending unfortunate pedestrians flying, or you can just use Hulk’s fists to knock chunks out of buildings. Scattered around the city are 35 ‘landmarks’ which reward achievements when they’re bought toppling down.

Aside from the random mindless destruction, The Incredible Hulk has missions and a storyline to follow, though this is definitely less interesting than bringing down buildings as most of the tasks are repetitive and dull.

Sadly, despite a couple of good ideas, The Incredible Hulk is another Wii title that has suffered in the conversion from the more power Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The console just can’t display the large environments so everything is shrouded in fog, with cars and people not appearing until you’re stood right next to them. The streets are also mysteriously sparse, and no one seems to care when Hulk pummels a building into dust. Controls are poor, too, making Hulk difficult to control and not much fun to play.

Verdict:

Boring and ugly movie license that’s riddled with technical issues. It’s no surprise Hulk is so angry, he’s played this game!
