Animation studio Pixar is the King Midas of movie makers. Everything the company touches turns to gold, and they have built such a reputation that each new film is a guaranteed success. Pixar may as well operate its own mint and spend its days printing money.

Well-E is its latest animated adventure, about a lonely robot left on Earth after humanity abandoned the planet and started using it to dump rubbish. Wall-E trundles around clearing up garbage and eventually encounters EVE, a futuristic robot with whom he falls in love.

The game has a brave stab at recreating the loneliness of Wall-E’s existence. At the start there are no enemies, Wall-E must be guided through the desolate landscape collecting trash. He eventually meets up with EVE and you are introduced to baddies that must be defeated. Luckily Wall-E has the ability to compact rubbish into cubes which he can then launch.

The Wall-E game also gives you the chance to control EVE, which introduces some new gameplay elements since EVE has the ability to fly. Using EVE you can fly freely around the levels, or race through tunnels.

Toward the end of the game it changes once again as you fight evil robots using lasers. The controls are tight and it’s easy to blast away hordes of the metallic foe, but these sections feel out of place with the movie’s sensitive and touching storyline.

There’s also a multiplayer mode where up to four players – all controlling their own Wall-E robots – trundle around an arena shooting each other, but there is something decidedly odd about a gang of cute robots trying to destroy each other.

Verdict:

Wall-E for the Wii is charming and perfect for kids who loved the movie, but experienced gamers will find it a shallow experience that’s over far too quickly. 60%
